John J. Howard, Ph.D. is the Founder and CEO of Sensus AI. He is a computer scientist specializing in biometrics, computer vision, machine learning, and the measurement of AI system performance across operational conditions and user populations.

Dr. Howard has spent his career at the intersection of AI performance, biometric technology, fairness, and real-world deployment. His work focuses on how automated systems perform outside controlled laboratory settings, including how factors such as demographics, environment, image acquisition, human decision-making, and operational workflows can affect system outcomes. He has authored and contributed to research on facial recognition performance, demographic effects, presentation attack detection, and human-algorithm interaction.

Prior to founding Sensus AI, Dr. Howard served as Chief Data Scientist at the Maryland Test Facility and helped lead large-scale biometric and AI evaluations for government stakeholders.

He is also a Research Fellow at Southern Methodist University’s AT&T Center for Virtualization and an editor for multiple ISO/IEC standards related to AI and biometric technologies.
